Technology is changing lives. From using it at work, to personal life choices. While advancement should augment the human society, new business models driven by technology are creating whirlpool of disproportionate size & leaving many scars in the process. Convenience has been a key magnet to adopt new changed choices, while consequences are not evidently clear. Increasing industries are seeing technological disruptions, it has also affected cleaning services industry in Dubai. Thinking on these lines, inspired by Ben Johnson’s post, I choose to put my thoughts in this blog. For philosophical categorization, we have used an example to understand their impact, below.
In the ever-evolving landscape of technology, two distinct philosophies have emerged: the ethos of “doing things for people” and the ideology of “empowering people to do things themselves.” This dichotomy is exemplified by industry giants such as Google and Facebook, who prioritize providing ready-made solutions and services, versus Microsoft and Apple, who focus on equipping users with tools to create and innovate on their own terms. While both approaches have their merits, there are concerns that companies leaning towards the former philosophy, such as Google and Facebook, may wield unchecked power and lack accountability.
Enter platforms, heralded as a new paradigm in the tech ecosystem. Unlike aggregators like Amazon, which control the entire supply chain and customer relationship, platforms like Shopify act as facilitators, empowering merchants to connect directly with consumers without intermediaries. This distinction grants platforms the ability to offer greater flexibility and customization, allowing merchants to differentiate themselves and foster innovation within their respective niches. Shopify’s recent introduction of the Shopify Fulfillment Network epitomizes this ethos, providing merchants with logistical support to compete with industry giants like Amazon on equal footing.
As the tech landscape continues to evolve, the competition between these two philosophies will shape the future of the industry. Platforms offer a promising alternative to the dominance of aggregators, providing a fertile ground for entrepreneurship and innovation. With platforms, every aspiring entrepreneur has the opportunity to build their own solutions and businesses, thereby stimulating economic growth and job creation.
